To share a pitch deck with investors, prepare a readable PDF, choose a public or private link for the material, test the recipient experience, and send a short message with a clear next step. Use engagement data as context for a conversation, not proof that someone wants to invest.
This guide covers a practical workflow and explains where DeckDesh 1.5.0 fits. DeckDesh is a free WordPress plugin for private PDF sharing from your own site, with basic document activity counts.
1. Prepare a deck that is easy to read
Export the version you intend to send as a PDF. Check that charts, labels, and footnotes remain readable on a laptop and phone. Remove comments, internal notes, and information that does not belong in this first conversation. Keep a dated source copy so you can identify exactly what you shared.
Use a clear filename and version label, such as Company-investor-deck-2026-10.pdf. Check the PDF itself after export: working links, correct page order, legible text, and no missing images. A short deck with a clear request is easier to respond to than an unexplained collection of files.
2. Choose public or private access deliberately
A public overview can work for material you are happy to have widely circulated. Use a private link when you want a controlled way to distribute a particular version and later stop access. Keep more sensitive diligence material separate from an introductory deck.
A private link can still be forwarded. In DeckDesh, anyone holding a working document link can open it. The recipient label helps you organize the document; it does not authenticate the reader. If you need viewer email verification, an agreement gate, or a multi-file data room, compare those requirements with the DocSend comparison before choosing your workflow.

Decide on expiry and downloads before sending
Set an expiry that gives the recipient enough time for the conversation you expect. If access ends, be ready to supply a current link. Expiry is useful for version control; it is not a way to retrieve a file someone already saved.
In DeckDesh 1.5.0, download and share controls are site-wide settings, so changing them affects all documents on that installation. An individual document can have an expiry date. Moving it to Trash revokes access, with a seven-day restoration window. Hiding download or share controls does not prevent screenshots or manual forwarding of a working link.
Set up DeckDesh and test the viewer
- Follow the installation and configuration guide, including the private-storage checks.
- Upload your PDF on the manage page. Add a recognizable title, recipient label, and version.
- Set the document’s expiry if needed, and review the site-wide download and share settings.
- Copy the original generated sharing link. Test it in a separate browser session that is not signed into management.
- Check every page, allowed actions, and the website header and footer on desktop and mobile.
Send the original generated link, not the cleaned address left in the viewer after it opens. DeckDesh exchanges the link credential for a browser session; copying that later address can omit what a new recipient needs.
3. Send a short message with one clear next step
Explain why you are sending the deck, what the company does, and what response you are asking for. Put the link where it is easy to find. If there is an expiry or a restriction that affects the recipient, mention it plainly.
Hi [name],
Following up on [conversation or introduction], here is our deck: [private link].
We help [customer] solve [problem]. Would you be open to a short conversation about [specific next step]?
Thanks,
[your name]
Adapt the example to the relationship and remove every placeholder. Avoid making access unnecessarily difficult: the recipient should understand what the link opens and how to contact you if it fails.
4. Read deck activity with care
DeckDesh records a qualifying view after three seconds in a visible browser tab. It applies best-effort bot filtering and suppresses repeated views of the same document from the same hashed IP within a five-minute window. The manage page shows document views, downloads, and share actions made through the viewer.
Those counts describe activity on the document/link, not a verified investor. Your own tests can create activity. A forwarded link may be opened by someone else; a missing event does not prove that nobody read the deck. Browser behavior and filtering also affect what gets recorded.
Version 1.5.0 does not report slide-by-slide reading time or completion rate. It also does not send deck-open notification emails. Check the current features and FAQ before building a process around a tracking feature.
5. Follow up on the conversation
If you agreed on a follow-up date, use that. Otherwise, choose a reasonable interval for the context and send a concise reminder with the original question or a useful update. Avoid telling someone that you know they read a specific slide when your tool cannot establish that.
A useful follow-up might be: “Checking whether this is relevant to your current focus. Happy to answer questions or send a shorter overview.” An open count alone should not determine the tone or urgency of your message.
Keep versions and access tidy
When material changes, label the new version clearly and test its link before sending it. In DeckDesh 1.5.0, uploading a new document creates a new access link; it does not silently update previously sent links. Tell recipients which version to use, and revoke outdated access when appropriate. Copies already downloaded remain outside your control.
Before you send: a final checklist
- The PDF is the intended version and contains only material appropriate for this recipient.
- The original sharing link works in a separate browser session.
- The deck is readable on desktop and mobile.
- Expiry and download settings match the intended conversation.
- The message explains the context and asks for one clear next step.
- You understand what the activity counts can and cannot tell you.
DeckDesh details checked against the public 1.5.0 release on 25 October 2026. For setup, see the documentation; for tool choice, see the DocSend comparison.
